What is Champs??

League Championships (CHAMPS) is an extra meet after our regular season for the very best swimmers in our Greater Richmond Area League (GRAL). They must have met the time required to qualify for Junior Varsity at a meet during our regular season. Addition practices are scheduled for our CHAMPS qualifiers and the meet is held at the SwimRVA pool.

In addition to age groups, swimmers also race in their own classification (Novice, Advanced, Junior Varsity, Varsity, and Senior Varsity), according to the best time they hold in each stroke. The classification depends on one's best time in the last year for each stroke. GRAL publishes new time standards at the beginning of each season (see the GRAL website).

Swimmers beginning the season without times will be placed as Novice swimmers in all strokes. When a child achieves a Junior Varsity (JV) time in an event, he or she will then swim as a JV swimmer for that particular event. A swimmer may be in different classifications for different strokes. Swimmers who achieve Junior Varsity, Varsity, or Senior Varsity times are qualified to go to Champs. Advanced swimmers do not hold valid Junior Varity, Varsity, or Senior Varsity times in that event and do not qualify for Champs. For more information, see the GRAL website.
